| Summary: | In this article a psychological understanding of wishes and wish fulfilment is related to the question of how religions and modern forms of spirituality contribute to wishes, the regulation of wishes and their fulfilment. Based on an understanding that wishes are aimed at bridging the gap between a deficient actual state and a wished for target state the functions of religions in the context of the fulfilment and regulation of wishes are discussed. By means of three examples (studies on intercessory prayer, belief in angels and belief in a wish fulfilling universe) it is argued that present forms of spirituality can be understood as offers on a market and are opted for in accordance to their usefulness for the individual. Thus religion and spirituality more and more serve an instantaneous salutary purpose and no longer an ulterior salvation. Results are depicted within the context of psychological theories. Implications for the study of religions are discussed. |
