Description
Résumé:Aside from philosophy and science literature – in terms of belles lettres – was established as a medium of the criticism of religion in the European history of religion after the Enlightenment. By asserting an autonomous aesthetic position a critical viewpoint independent of theological or religious obligations and of rational standards was provided. On the level of argumentation literature criticises religion and uses religious patterns of criticism as well; on the level of literary form literature undermines claims for truth and representation and simultaneously presents religious options. In the process of modernisation literature contributes firstly to a pluralisation of the notions of criticism, and secondly to the reflection on and the change of religion in modern societies. Different aspects of literary criticism of religion can be shown in the texts of the Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935). On the one hand, he criticises traditional shapes of religion in a radical way, yet on the other hand he deals with the problems of modernism using the semantics of religion. Proceeding from a pluralistic concept of the human subject, Pessoa attains to the multiplication of the authorship and his literary form of the »drama in persons«. This leads him consequently to a perspective notion of religion. Viewed from different standpoints, various religious patterns are proven to be genuine and true: a new paganism, or esoteric and occult interpretations of Christian and Jewish elements. Poetry itself takes the place of a religious mode of existence and practice. It is at the same time an expression of the interminable plural reality and a new rhetoric locus for the discussion of the relationship between religion and modernism under the conditions of criticism.
