| Summary: | This article deals with the Collège de Sociologie (1937-1939), a group of French scholars whose contribution to the theoretical analysis of religious phenomena has been overlooked so far. The theoretical approaches of the Collège are heavily influenced by the work of Émile Durkheim and particularly Marcel Mauss. However, the scholars of the Collège are less interested in the analysis of the sacred primitive societies than in the role of the sacré in the modern world. It is this analysis of the religious elements in modern societies which makes the ideas of these scholars important and fruitful for religious theory even today. The article outlines the theoretical views of the Collège de Sociologie concentrating on the work of George Bataille. A few central notions like le sacré and la depénse are introduced to illustrate the implications they have for a reformulation of the sociological paradigms presently dominating the theory of religion. |
