Summary:In recent years, many studies have focused on Sayyid Quṭb as one of the Islamist thinkers whose writings have most influenced some Muslim militants in various parts of the world. His thought on Islam's compatibility with democracy is controversial. The debate is usually based on understanding his concept of ḥākimiyya, ‘sovereignty’. Contributing to the debate, this article focuses on the militants' understanding of sovereignty in relation to democracy, and Quṭb's response to them.
