Zusammenfassung:Soka Gakkai's remarkable success in Italy went through a difficult test when COVID-19 hit. In the first half of 2020, Italy had both more casualties and stricter quarantine measures than any other European country. The paper explores how the National Council of the Italian Soka Gakkai reacted to the pandemic, and how its decisions were received by the members. The National Council was more cautious, and acted earlier, than the Italian government itself. Not all members agreed. In retrospective, however, the measures probably contained the effects of COVID-19 among the Italian members and prepared a successful transition back from online to in-person activities, preserving Soka Gakkai from problems other religions experienced in the country.
