This pessimism was inherited by the next generations of Portuguese elites who also noted the fact that the current condition of their homeland is associated with dominance of Catholicism in the country’s life. On the basis of these feelings and perceptions appeared the idea of the change of the monarchy on the republican political regime. The first part of the article contains the brief discussion of the historical and social circumstances in which these ideas were shaped. Then the projects of Portuguese theorists of republicanism are discussed concerning the place and role of religion in the future system. Another part of the article refers to the implementation of these projects, based on the law of separation of church and state and shows their failure and return to the old relationship between politics and religion in the New State (1933-1974). | ||
