Venturing into both historical and contemporary debates on sharia and its relationship to state law, the book shows how norms deriving from pre-modern Islam have been given a different form to fulfill the needs of a modern state. When it comes specifically to the Egyptian Constitution, Islamic legal norms are recast as part of national culture and identity, thus serving not only a religious purpose but also a civic one, as the glue of the national fabric. This dynamic also emerges from the case studies of women’s and non-Muslims’ constitutional rights.
