Si l’Eglise proposait aux croyants l’accès au Royaume de Dieu, situé dans un espace transcendant d’après la mort, les utopistes érigeaient des Cités de l’homme, accessibles aux hommes dans l’ici et le maintenant, pendant cette vie. Par ses thèmes constitutifs - l’homme démiurge, la manipulation du destin individuel et collectif, la nature non corrompue, l’innocence adamique, le bon sauvage, la communauté des biens, l’égalitarisme, la liberté sexuelle, la raison dominante, l’éducation et la culture laïques - l’utopisme était une hérésie. D’un autre côté, la satire des systèmes sociaux de l’époque, plus ou moins patente dans tout texte utopique, a été ressentie comme une critique de l’Eglise et de son correspondent séculaire, la monarchie de droit divin. En fin de compte, les utopies questionnaient la légitimité de la civilisation chrétienne." | ||
