Zusammenfassung:ChristmascelebrationinmajorcitiesinSouthwesternNigeriaovertheyearshashadattachedtoitvariousnuancesbywhichithasattainedaculturalstatus.ItisaChristianreligioustraditionalfestivalbutadmiredbythepopulaceinmajority.TheSeasonbeginsinlateNovemberanddoesnotendinpracticeuntilperhapsthelastdayofDecember.Thebeautifulcoloursofgreen,redandgoldtakeovertheenvironmentinmarketsandpublicplaces,coupledwitheconomicactivitiesengagedandbenefitsderivedbybusinessmindedindividuals,groups,institutionsandagencies.Thispaper,therefore,investigatesthereligiouseconomyinvolvedinthecultureofChristmascelebrationinselectedmajorcitiesinSouthwesternNigeria,usinghistoricalandqualitativemethods.RationalChoiceTheoryandSymbolicInteractionismareadoptedforthepurposeofthestudy.PreliminarystudyrevealsthatChristmascelebrationinSouthwesternNigeria,likemanyothercountriesoftheworld,isaculturewhichhasinmanywaysaccommodatedreligiouseconomyinpublicplaces.WhatistheOriginofChristmascelebration?ChristmasCelebrationinglobalperspective;CelebrationofChristmasinSouthwesternNigeriapublicplacesandreligiouseconomicactivitiesattached;allthesearetheconcernsofthispaperwith a view to bringing to the fore the focus of the study.
