Description
Résumé:There is a perception going on about immortality of soul in Christianity. That is, some question agitating the mind of people, for example; what happens after death. Some claimed that when a man dies, he becomes unconscious and his soul ‘sleeps.’ Others claimed that the soul goes directly to heaven if the individual believedin Jesus Christ. Therefore, this paper aimed to examine the areas of disparity on the issue of immortality of the soul in Christianity and its implications. Also, to clarify the perception of people about the doctrine of immortality of the soul and evaluate it against the backdrop of what the Bible, both the Old and New Testament teach about it. The method employed was historicaldiachronic approach. The areas of disparity found out by this paper includes: what happens after death.Although most of the major religions of the world believe in the immortality of the soul, they believe that death is not the end of one’s life; it is not annihilation, rather it is transition of life, among others. But, some scholars argue that there is no immortality of the soul. They believe that death is a period of absolute annihilation. Contrarily, others regard this as erroneous teachings. However, the following recommendations were madethatthere is need for the church to re-conceptualize their perception about the doctrine of immortality of the soul and evaluate it against the backdrop of what the Bible teaches concerningwhat happens after death. Immortality of the soul should be devoid of ‘Necromancy’.
