Die Mitgliedsstaaten der EU unterscheiden sich massiv hinsichtlich der Ausgestaltung ihrer wohlfahrtsstaatlichen Systeme, dennoch lässt sich Wohlfahrtsstaatlichkeit nach wie vor als trade mark europäischer Sozialmodelle verstehen. Historisch aus den Auseinandersetzungen zwischen gouvernementaler Bürokratie und Kirche während der Nationalstaatsbildung entstanden, hängt die Legitimation der heutigen Wohlfahrtssysteme nicht zuletzt von deren Akzeptanz in der Bevölkerung ab. Diese Akzeptanz und ihre religiöse Beeinflussung soll auf der Basis der Daten des European Value Study (EVS 2008) für die Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Union ausgeleuchtet werden. Dabei soll insbesondere untersucht werden, wie Religion als länderspezifischer Kontext (in Form von Majoritätsverhältnissen und dem Staat-Religions-Verhältnis) und als individuelle Religiosität (Konfessionszugehörigkeit, Kirchgangshäufigkeit und Identität) die Akzeptanz sowohl staatlicher Umverteilung als auch staatlicher Steuererhebung beeinflussen. Auf der Basis einer Mehrebenenanalyse kommt die Untersuchung zu dem Ergebnis, dass sowohl individuelle Religiosität als auch gesellschaftliche religiöse Majoritätsverhältnisse trotz starker Säkularisierung in Europa nach wie vor einen Effekt auf die Akzeptanz von Umverteilung und Besteuerung haben. 
520 |a The article asks whether and how individual religiosity and religion as context relate to the European welfare state model. Although the welfare states in Europe differ considerably concerning the specific pattern of the specific design the welfare state still is a trade mark of Europe. Normative political theories suggest that this trade mark requires some degree of social, political and economic homogeneity in order to be maintained. The analysis is based on data from the European Value Study (EVS 2008) and addresses the question of whether religion affects the welfare state acceptance. The analysis comprises not only the analysis of the societal context of religion and of individual religiosity on the acceptance of governmental redistributive spending but also on the acceptance of taxation. It suggests - although the results are ambiguous - that different religion-related factors affect both sides of redistribution and that denomination as well as the intensity of religiosity have an impact. Additional, social spending and the religious majority on the country level are important factors influencing the acceptance - and thereby the legitimacy - of the European welfare states.
