| Résumé: | Associations have been found between religiousness/spirituality and health-related outcomes. Key dimensions of religiousness/spirituality have been identified and efforts have sought to identify key mediators. More recent efforts have attempted to clarify the pathways through which specific psychosocial factors are associated with physiological outcomes. Although some studies have included culturally diverse samples and explored the cultural dimensions of religiousness/spirituality variables, these relationships are understudied. The inclusion of theoretical models, such as the Common Sense Model of Illness Representations and the Cultural Empowerment Model provide a framework for understanding the role of cultural factors in spirituality and health research. Cultural considerations in illness perceptions, fatalism, God locus of health control, and religious coping are discussed in research with diverse people groups with a special emphasis on Chinese persons. Future research will be enhanced by incorporating a culturally competent perspective that moves beyond superficial dimensions of culture to include deeper cultural meanings. |
