Psychology of religion, however, has mistakenly followed the general trends in psychology by focusing on the individual while neglecting the cultural character of the phenomena and by adopting the natural science bias in the field, which considers experimental and quantitative measurement as the gold standard. Building culturally robust and intelligible theories capable of responding more effectively and sensitively to complex problems faced by a rapidly changing world requires openness to diverse orientations to knowledge and practice, in addition to the traditional empirical approach to psychological inquiry. Qualitative research designed to explore and understand specific religious forms of life that give meaning within a cultural context is particularly suited to advance the goals of the cultural psychology of religion. The limitations of the natural science paradigm in investigating topics related to cultural psychology of religion will be ex-amined in this article before discussing the benefits of qualitative inquiry in general, and narrative analysis in particular, in furthering the psychological study of religion and spirituality | ||
