| Résumé: | This paper describes the experiences of Irish-born and Irish-seminary educated Roman Catholic priests who live and work in dioceses in the United States. They reside primarily in the West, South, and Southwest. A variety of questions contained in a mail survey questionnaire were completed by 402 Irish priests who are alumni of five Irish seminaries. The priests were asked about their seminary preparation, the influence of American culture on their lives, how they view their ethnicity, whether they are treated differently because they are from Ireland, how satisfied they are with priesthood, what problems they face as priests, their ecclesiological and theological concerns, and their views of the impact of the Second Vatican Council on the Church. They will likely be the last of a long continuous line of Irish priests to serve in the United States. |
