Then it reviews available empirical evidence concerned with the distinctiveness of the rural church, the assessment of clergy stress and burnout, and the role of personality in clergy research. Against this background new data are presented on Maslach’s three component model of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) among a random sample of over one thousand full-time stipendiary male parochial Anglican clergy. The evidence suggests that rural clergy have a lower sense of personal accomplishment than comparable clergy working in other types of parishes, but that they suffer neither from higher levels of emotional exhaustion nor from higher levels of depersonalization. | ||
