Better understanding about the rooms where Christians could have their meetings, i.e., their common meals could help us to interpret the problems in the Corinthian Church, why Paul reproved the Christians in Corinth that their meal was not the meal of the Lord anymore (1 Cor. 11:17-34). The paper shows that there were some house owners of among Corinthian Christians. It is also likely that there were wealthy Christians, for example, Erastus could be one of them. Paul mentioned Gaius, the host of the whole church, it should be understood that his house was used for Corinthian gatherings. Probably it was not possible for the whole group have their meal in one room of a house. The rooms in question were too small and the church too big, so it seems that Christians found their own original ways to have their meals together. The Corinthian Christians would have enough space, if part of them were in triclinium and the other part in atrium. This also could show the possible social distinction between the wealthier and the poorer Christians, this was what Paul criticized Corinthian Christians for most severely. | ||
