| 520 | |a Although both Eesti Kirik and Svetdienas Rits were official newspapers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the respective countries (Estonia and Latvia), their historical background, number of pages, foundation and development are different. Both newspapers wanted to enhance parish life, to inform about the development of parishes, the current situation and plans in the church, to give directions and instructions on current issues, to tell their readers about wide range of theological issues, to reach those readers who couldnot receive spiritual care due to the lack of pastors and destroyed church buildings. The editors of both newspapers promoted official view of the church and followed the development in synods, published sermons and speeches of bishops. The editorial board of both newspapers included knowledgeable theologians with experience in the mission of church so only the detailed information on the current events was published. The newspapers were created and developed based on different decisions of the church governing body. The Latvian Internal Mission Society began to publish Svetdienas Rits as one of the activities that promoted the development of spiritual life. Later it was taken over by the Consistory. The Estonian Missionary Society began to publish the newspaper Meie Kirik in 1920. However, by the decision of the synod in 1921 the newspaper did not become the official voice of the church. The creation of the newspaper Eesti Kirik was primarily connected with the particular theological schools of thought and the two newspapers that already were in print - Meie Kirik and Protestantline Ilm. Svetdienas Rits offered more information than Eesti Kirik due to the size of the newspaper. Svetdienas Rits published more reports from parishes, broader overviews on activities of parishes, political reviews of Latvian and international news, official information and decisions of the Consistory (later called Church Central Board) and the bishop, detailed accounts of received donations and informed about new Christian editions. Taking into account the large range of events in the years of the early 1920s, including expansive reforms in the legislation, in relationship of the state and church, changes in the economic system of the church, coexistence of various theological schools of thought, it should be acknowledged that newspapers Eesti Kirik and Svetdienas Rits made significant contribution to the development of the church and parishes in the after-war period between 1920-1925. | ||
