Their presence as agrarian entrepreneurs is oftentimes described at some length, but only in the context of pepper production. Little is said of Christian involvement in other spheres of agriculture, especially wet-rice cultivation. The purpose of this paper is to propose a revision to the trade- and pepper-centred perspective. It examines the Tarisāppaḷḷi Copperplate Grant of 849 to place in relief the larger regimes of agriculture and the revenue systems associated with it in which the Christians, as well as long-distance trade, were deeply implicated from very early times.
