520 |a Discusses the unremitting efforts of Laevinus Torrentius, vicar to prince-bishop Ernest of Liège, for the establishment of a papal nunciature in the Rhineland in the 1580's. He considered the presence of such a representative of Rome as strong support for the Catholic Church in a region which suffered from the continuous attacks of dissenters. Moreover, he realized the importance of a stable and healthy situation in the diocese of Liège for the southern Low Countries, which Farnese had regained for Spain and the Church of Rome. Due to the constant problems in the Netherlands, as well as those arising from some archbishops of Cologne who sympathized with Protestantism, the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-63) had yet to be published. The newly appointed nuncio Bonhomini regarded their publication as one of his first tasks. With the help of Torrentius a synod was organized in Liège to overcome the strong opposition on the part of the local clergy, who saw the resolutions of Trent as a threat to their many privileges.
