| Zusammenfassung: | Examines the possibilities for research offered by diaries of bishops of the Counter-Reformation, on the basis of the diary kept by the Archbishop of Mechelen, Mathias Hovius, between 1617 and 1620. This source does not only allow insight into its writer's daily activities, but is also highly interesting in several other respects. The archbishop frequently vents his irritation, satisfaction, or surprise about his experiences in the course of the day. This makes it possible to draw a life-like portrait of him. However, the diary notes are especially valuable when they report on audiences, conversations, or negotiations. Although highly subjective, Hovius's diary offers a refreshing contrast to the official voices of ecclesiastical leaders, often conveying the sentiments of common believers. |
