520 |a Takes a close look at local parish life in one of Antwerp's poorest neighborhoods during the second half of the 19th century. In spite of the rapidly spreading process of dechristianization, relations between believers and parish priests remained surprisingly cordial. For the wealthy and powerful employers who lived amid their employees in the parish, good relations with the local church provided prestige as well as a barrier against socialism. More significant, however, were the positive attitudes of the ordinary parishioners, mostly workers and beggars, in the "parish of misery." Spending most of their days out on the streets, outside their slums, they had developed a wide range of fraternities and societies that were quite often acknowledged and institutionalized by the parish priests. These priests, some of whom were natives of the parish itself, showed a remarkable ability for getting on well with their poor parishioners. Initially their work was confined to purely pastoral and sacramental tasks, but gradually their activities came to include a network of local organizations ranging from Sunday schools to insurance companies. This brought about a striking change in their daily pursuits.
