520 |a The views of the Catholic Church on its commitment to the ecumenical movement were laid down in the Vatican Council II decree 'Unitatis Redintegratio' (1964). The substance of this decree was the result of a long process of reflection and discussion within national Church communities. The author traces this process within the Catholic communities of the Netherlands and Belgium between 1921 and 1964 and also pays attention to the possible mutual influence between the two countries with regard to ecumenism. The views of discussion groups and institutions promoting Christian unity changed radically in this period. The traditional concept of a "return to the fold" was abandoned in favor of a Catholic version of ecumenism. In 1947 the monks of Christian Unity in Chevetogne, Belgium, started to propagate the new ecumenical approach internationally. In 1951 they were joined in this effort by the Dutch St. Willibrord Society. The new ecumenism was well received by the Secretariat for Unity in Rome (founded in 1960) and this eventually resulted in 'Unitatis Redintegratio.'
