The essay identifies mystical elements in both philosophical Daoist traditions and religious Daoism and notes some of their distinct features. It endeavors to show that the concept of mysticism affords a unique and instructive perspective from which to understand these traditions and explicates two modes of mystical expression and thinking - the inclusivist and exclusivist - that it asserts are represented by philosophical and religious Daoism respectively.
