This study adopted a broader view by examining negative and positive outcomes of general and religious coping, and extended the cultural context by considering a sample of 74 Lebanese students from the American University of Beirut. Students completed a series of measures incorporating general coping, religious coping, and the outcomes of posttraumatic growth and distress. All of the measures were reliable and matched patterns of reliability reported by the developers of the scales. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the value of coping strategies differed depending on the outcome measures considered. While general coping strategies were the sole significant predictors of distress, religious and general coping strategies were significant predictors of posttraumatic growth. These findings contribute to the growing awareness that growth can occur as a result of stress, particularly in this Lebanese student sample. | ||
