Description
Résumé:Mahāsī Method, by master Mahāsī Sāyadaw (1904-1982), is one of the most known vipassanā meditation methods of the modern Vipassana Movement of Theravāda Buddhism. This article aims to investigate the relationship between teachings (pariyatti) and practice (patipatti) of this method. To do so, we will present the basic principles of the method, the meditation techniques and, finally, the 16 stages of Insight-knowledge (vipassanā-ñāṇa), which are meditative experiences leading to the final experience of nibbāna. The uniqueness of the Mahāsī Method lies in the absence of preparatory techniques of concentration and focus on the techniques of vipassanā, hence it is called suddha-vipassanā, pure Insight. Furthermore, the main meditative techniques are the Mental Noting and the Momentary Concentration.
