First the extent of secularization of Czech society is followed and then the socio-historical conditions for the possible conversion of population to an atheistic philosophy is examined. Against this background, the policy of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in these matters is described. In connection with the official aim to educate the young generation in the Marxist/Leninist spirit, a brief account of the main tenets of the doctrine is given. Because Marxists/Leninists consider their teaching to be the only truly scientific teaching on society and its development, these tenets are confronted with some real features of the Czech development under Communist rule. Special reference is made to the quasi-religious aspects of the Marxist/Leninist doctrine, features which largely superseded its original claim to be a scientific theory.
