Zusammenfassung:The basic method in the sociology of religion has been survey research. This has produced valuable results but has placed historical constraints on its future development. It has produced a narrow view of methodology and has limited our concern with historical-cultural realities. The expansion of the philosophy of science and the criticism of positivism lead us to believe our methodology will have to be reformulated. Several sociological theories of the American religious experience are discussed. Their limitations are briefly mentioned. Methodology will have to incorporate a broader concern with historical and cultural factors in order to properly predict the future of religion in America.
