A study of 161 sociological research monographs revealed a certain amount of confusion in the operationalizing procedures which attempt to measure Protestantism. There are three problems revealed in this research; they are (1) residual lumping, (2) the range of traditions within the Protestant category, and (3) the problem of the level of measurement. These problems are discussed and illustrated. The data indicate a need for an awareness of the complexity of religious phenomena when analyzing Protestantism.
