Our research shows that the two groups are quite distinct and that previous efforts to type unchurched Protestants have hidden the unique characteristics of "marginal members" (inactive Protestant church members). Using cluster analysis, four types of marginal members are identified. The social characteristics and beliefs of individuals representing these types explain their low levels of church attendance and continued identification as church members.
