Au milieu du IIe millénaire, l'affinement intellectuel tendit à faire préférer, sans jamais imposer, les symboles aux effigies des dieux, dans les civilisations urbanisées. Mais là, la tradition préhistorique perpétuée chez les nomades restait en vigueur dans le culte des bétyles. Au Ier millénaire encore, toute idée de transcendance semble avoir été étrangère à cet aniconisme total ou partiel, exprimé dans des symboles aussi frustes que les masseboth. Ces symboles furent rejetés dans le royaume de Juda en même temps qu'une iconographie divine largement vidée de sa signification première. In all the Near-Eastern world, the non-appearance of divine images, for cultic prospects, on the prehistoric periods, suggests that divinities properly speaking, anthropomorphic, were conceived only progressively, from the time of the discovery of the proto-Sumerian script, in Mesopotamia. In the middle of the 2nd millennium B.C., the refined intellectual taste tended to prefer, without imposing them, the symbols to the images of the divinities, in the urbanised civilisations. But there, the prehistoric tradition preserved among nomads, stayed alive by the way of the cult of the betyles. Still, on the 1st millennium B.C., all notion of transcendence seems to have been foreign to this total or partial aniconism, expressed by symbols as rough as the masseboth. Those symbols were rejected in the kingdom of Judah together with a divine iconography mainly emptied of its original meaning. | ||
