Description
Résumé:In this short article for the forum on Black Catholicism, I examine Afro-creole opposition to the New Orleans Archdiocese’s plan to create a Black “national” parish. The archdiocese’s decision to create St. Katherine’s parish and particularly the local protests to that [End Page 263] decision draw attention to the ethnicizing capacity of religion. Furthermore, it illuminates how the tradition of Catholicism (not simply Protestantism) is significant to Black religious cultures.
