520 |a A letter was sent on October 13, 2007 by Muslim leaders to Christian leaders to join with them in affirming and practicing the two love commandments: to love God with our whole being and our neighbor as ourselves. “A Common Word Between Us and You” has been widely circulated and well received by the Christian community. There have been several thoughtful responses, including ones from the Vatican and from ecumenical bodies. The article speaks to the centrality of love in both religious traditions and addresses two doctrines within the Christian faith that need further discussion—the trinity and christology—arguing that these two articles of faith are central to the Christian understanding of love and may be understood in ways that do not radically differ from the teaching of Islam on the unity of the one God. The article also suggests ways to continue the dialogue and to practice jointly the love commandments.
