520 |a Women are human beings to whom God has destined his Word. Consequently, a woman is responsible for her faith just like a man. Thus, she is obliged to respect the same duties as a man without necessarily having the same rights. Today another duty awaits her, also deriving from the Scriptures: the fight, i.e. the Gihâd in a literal sense (and not in the sad sense prevalent in the West). Once again, she must use reason – the basis of her faith – but also the means at her disposal in order to gain her rights. Claiming equality allows one to distinguish oneself, to take one’s distance from all the rigorist claims and to set the struggle of women into today’s modern framework. The answer is to be found in a liberal interpretation of the Scriptures that would allow the believer to live in harmony with their faith without lacerations, but feeling at home in their own times. The Koran is primarily history-oriented but it is also oriented towards the emancipation of the believer, therefore of women as well. This is the goal of the revolution. As human beings, women today are part of a universal society and must therefore participate in the elaboration of a universal ethics. Woman is called upon to participate in it with her culture, her history, her spirituality, and even with that sensibility of hers, which has led to her inferiority because of its opposition to virile masculine reason. Advocating equality of the sexes in Islam is not going against faith and not even revising the law is assailing faith, as is held by the famous scarecrows of institutionalized Islam, which govern certain Muslim countries.
