This paper concerns essentially the secular society of the center of Lusitania, it tries to analyse those who populated the villae and the fields, who walked along the old roads of the region, who built monuments in the name of this new form of thinking about death - for what is Christianity but a new form of responding to this inherent fear of being human? Of those who found it difficult to become Christians or to maintain themselves as such and of those, ultimately, who died in pace. We will try to understand how and when these people Christianized, what form the Church settled in rural areas, without penetrating the urban elites and the hierarchical ecclesiastical world. Finally, and paradoxically, we question the very concept of Christianization. What is it to be a Christian during Late Antiquity and what form do places and objects tell us of their real adherence to the Christian faith? | ||
