520 | |a Language is the expression of the thoughts and of the experience of men and women, who are understood as beings who establish relations with themselves, with other, with nature, with the world, with the cosmos and with the transcendental. In each relation several types of language – a group of gestures, sounds or written impressions – are found. We contemplate two of them: the denotative language: direct, objective, in which there are no doubts as to its meaning – here we find the concepts and definitions; the connotative language: indirect, subjective, with more than one possibility of understanding – here are the symbols, poetry, art, religion. Language, here is understood as the means where relations happen, turns to symbol when there is an excess of vitality in need of expression, once the symbol – verbal or non-verbal – contains an invisible and deeper meaning and serves as a bridge to connect two halves which together give meaning (signification and direction) to a whole. Blocking the symbolical language results in the enclosure of thoughts in only one dimension or the loss of references and meaning.
