520 |a Death in any family is a traumatic event that disturbs the regular course of life. The present population of persons with intellectual disability is most probably the first generation of aging people with intellectual disabilities ever living. The increase in their life expectancy makes the possibility of experiences with separation, death and mourning a new reality for this population. Parents or siblings are passing away and the person with intellectual disability continues to live. This presentation is a review of the literature of mourning with special focus on Jewish mourning rituals related to persons with intellectual disability drawn from our experiences with this population in residential care in Israel.
