It introduces the terms ‘spiritual crisis’, ‘spiritual emergence’ and ‘spiritual emergency’, summarizes their characteristics and suggests what may help those experiencing them. The work of the SCN is placed within the context of similar approaches in the USA, such as those of Stanislav Grof and David Lukoff. The SCN takes a non-pathologizing perspective, suggesting that such experiences can be opportunities for personal growth or transformation. The SCN does not promote any particular framework for understanding spiritual crisis but, while not taking an anti-psychiatry stance, diagnoses are avoided. The article concludes with an update on a recent SCN conference at the University of Sunderland and provides further resources for those interested in spirituality and mental health.
