Hillsong est un phénomène religieux mondial: il a des succursales dans les grandes villes du monde, on compte des célébrités parmi ses adeptes et un groupe musical de louanges récompensé par de nombreux prix. M’appuyant sur cinq années d’ethnographie multi-située en Australie et au Brésil, j’analyse des infrastructures importantes – bâtiments d’église intelligents, paysages sonores branchés et médias numériques – qui ont permis à Hillsong de s’établir au Brésil. Je montre que ces technologies constituent une architecture à travers laquelle circule le « christianisme cool » de Hillsong. J’analyse combien ces infrastructures signifient la réussite, la modernité et le cosmopolitisme pour les jeunes Brésiliens de la classe moyenne qui aspirent à rompre avec le pentecôtisme conservateur local qui s’adresse aux plus démunis. Je mets ici l’accent sur les infrastructures et les acteurs humains et non humains qui permettent à la religion de traverser les frontières. J’attire enfin une attention particulière à la façon dont l’imagination et les différences de pouvoir façonnent aussi bien la mobilité que l’immobilité. | ||
| 520 | |a This article explores the infrastructures that allow the Australian Pentecostal megachurch Hillsong to expand into Brazil. Hillsong is a global religious phenomenon: it has branches in global cities, celebrities among its followers, and an award-winning worship band. Drawing on five years of multi-sited ethnography in Australia and Brazil, I analyse significant infrastructures – smart church buildings, hip soundscapes, and digital media – that enabled Hillsong to establish itself in Brazil. I show that such technologies comprise an architecture through which Hillsong’s ‘Cool Christianity’ circulates. I argue that these infrastructures communicate success, excitement, modernity, and cosmopolitanism to young middle-class Brazilians who aspire to break with the local conservative Pentecostalism that caters for the poor. Here, I call for a focus on human and nonhuman actors and infrastructures that move religion across borders, and a special attention to how imagination and power differentials shape mobility and immobility. | ||
