Résumé: | Both of these books are introductory college textbooks on the subject of religion and politics in the United States, and both are excellent. Both take a serious social science approach to religion; the scholarship of both is beyond reproach; both new editions incorporate and reflect recent research and emerging trends; both are well written; both cover the major topics and use tables and illustrations well; and either could be successfully used in the classroom. The Wald and Calhoun-Brown (hereafter Wald) textbook is a little longer and provides an extensive bibliography; it is also more than twice as expensive. The books cover many of the same topics—the major Christian traditions, non-Christian religions in America, church–state separation, gender issues, religion and voting, religious interest... |
