Résumé: | Prime Minister Tayip Erdogan's political and social conflict with Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's perception of Islam as an obstacle to secularization and modernization—when the early Republic was first directed toward Europe and the West in a quest to become a nation-state—is now openly and sometimes forcefully contested in the public, private, and civil society sectors. Conflicting social and political shifts from Kemalism to Turkish Islam are experienced regularly by Erdogan's party and its efforts toward implementing the Justice and Development Party (AKP) model for structuring democratic government institutions. As a result, today, in general, nationalism and Islam are no longer considered incompatible in Turkish society. How and why did the “new Turks” evolve from Kemalism? What is the impact of “Turkish Muslim nationalism” in contemporary Türkiye? Is the new alternative definition of the nation based on a nostalgic revival of Turkey's Ottoman past?
