Ce que l'on se propose de montrer c’est que la peur est activement recherchée et entretenue comme instrument servant à produire un état d’esprit particulier de l'ascète. Loin d’être une émotion spontanée et passive, elle constitue un objet artificiel capable, de par son aspect paradoxal, de joindre les dimensions ascétique et mystique de l'expérience monastique, et donc d’ouvrir à la perception d'une altérité transcendante. Ce qui remet en question les interprétations de la religion, tant scientifiques que théologiques, qui en font une réalité passive de l'humain. | ||

This source constitutes a representative synthesis of the ascetic doctrine of primitive monasticism, and thus allows us to shed light on an important theme of the thought and practice of the Desert Fathers. What we contend is that fear is actively sought and maintained as an instrument used to produce a particular state of mind of the ascetic. Far from being a spontaneous and passive emotion, fear constitutes an artificial object capable, by its paradoxical aspect, of joining the ascetic and mystical dimensions of the monastic experience, and therefore of opening to the perception of a transcendent alterity. This calls into question the interpretations of religion, both scientific and theological, which make it a passive product of humanity. | ||
