The article argues that (1) Treason analyzes early formations of secular institutions and narratives within Elizabethan England as co-opting Christian expressions of agapeic love, and (2) responds to that co-optation by engaging in a historical method of constructing narratives rooted in instances of self-denying affection and devotion found within religious communities.
