520 |a Ẓarf is a well-known concept in classical Arabic adab-literature — it stands for refinement, courtesy, elegance, and wit, among other things. Less known is its counterpart, thiqal, denoting all things heavy. A thaqīl (pl. thuqalāʾ) is a bore whose often boorish conduct is deemed insufferable by anyone whose company he seeks. The oldest extant text on the subject of the insufferable, Ibn al-Marzbān’s Dhamm al-thuqalāʾ, “Censure of the Insufferable,” is studied to shed more light on the characteristics of the thaqīl and on everything a ẓarīf is not.
