Cette réputation du reste est grandement justifiée : enfant sous la Révolution, puis romancier et essayiste sous la Restauration et la monarchie de Juillet, Stendhal n’a cessé de proclamer son incroyance et, parallèlement, de mener un combat acharné contre les professionnels de la croyance. Le roman stendhalien, roman violemment anticlérical, est ainsi peuplé de jésuites manipulateurs et de dévotes malfaisantes ayant pour objectif de s’emparer du pouvoir et de contrôler la société en soutenant de toutes leurs forces la nouvelle union du Trône et de l’Autel, de la monarchie et du catholicisme. Il est alors peu étonnant de constater que les héros de Stendhal sont très fréquemment des ennemis de la religion, qui entendent miner cette dernière, tantôt dissimulés sous le masque de Tartuffe, tantôt à visage découvert, dévoilant explicitement leur athéisme. Les enjeux de la croyance stendhalienne sont pourtant plus complexes qu’il n’y paraît au premier abord : touché depuis toujours par la beauté des cérémonies catholiques, Stendhal attribue sa propre sensibilité esthétique à ses personnages de roman, tout particulièrement à ses personnages italiens, en véritable amoureux de l’Italie. Il fait aussi de certains d’entre eux de profonds et de sincères croyants, et croit lui-même en l’existence de prêtres absolument pieux et réellement bons. Enfin, dans la lignée de Chateaubriand, Stendhal ne conçoit pas l’épanouissement de la passion amoureuse sans celui de la foi : dans ses fictions, les vrais amoureux sont aussi croyants. En définitive, Stendhal n’était-il pas un incroyant qui rêvait de croire ?
