Zusammenfassung: | Robert Browning's Red Cotton Night-Cap Country (1873) has not been seen as one of his important poems on religion, but it makes an important contribution to the philosophy of religion. Browning's philosophical discussion of religion in Red Cotton Night-Cap Country is elucidated by his earlier treatment of Catholicism in the dramatic monologue "Bishop Blougram's Apology" (1855). While both poems evince an anti-Catholic sentiment that was common among Protestant Victorian writers, this article shows that Browning's critique of Catholicism is used as a vehicle for discussing the German Romantic philosophy of religion. Drawing on the philosophical ideas and conceptual language of German idealism, Catholicism for Browning sym-bolizes a particular problem of epistemology wherein the dogmatic structures of theology represent the logical operations of the intellect in contrast to the faculty of imagination that apprehends the essential religious ideas embodied in all creeds. Red Cotton Night-Cap Country reveals the importance of German idealism for Browning's concept of religion as well as his unique contribution to religious discussions in the nineteenth century. |
