Description
Résumé:In recent decades, discussions on practical approaches to theodicy tend to be privileged over theoretical approaches. I contend that Dietrich Bonhoeffer has much to contribute to this discussion. In this article, I provide a reconstruction of a Bonhoefferian practical theodicy, drawing extensively from two often neglected works: his Seminar Paper on Job (1927) and Temptation Lectures (1937). I compare five important aspects that characterize Bonhoeffer and the Zhuangzi's practical theodicies. Building on the nuances highlighted by the comparisons, I provide a more systematic development of Bonhoeffer's practical theodicy, which centers around the suffering God who can only be understood through the who-ness of the suffering Christ. In doing so, I show how a Bonhofferian practical theodicy is relevant to an Asian theology of suffering.
