But some recent research has revealed that this difference is not universal', varying in space and time. However, only a few scholars have focused on religiosity gender-gap trends over time, either on the theoretical or empirical levels. The aim of this article is to help fill this gap by analysing the progress of gender differences in religiosity from 1981 to 2009 in Italy, an interesting cultural context because of the gradual penetration of secularisation and the high level of gender inequality. Our empirical analysis is based on a longitudinal approach, using data from the European Values Study. The findings show that the gender gap in Italy was quite stable in regard to many aspects of religiosity, with three noteworthy exceptions: the gender gap decreased in beliefs, in intergenerational transmission of faith and in adherence to the Church's doctrines on prostitution, abortion, divorce, euthanasia, suicide and adultery. Contrary to expectations, in most cases this narrowing came about because of an increase in men's religiosity, not a decrease in women's. | ||

Cependant, seuls quelques chercheurs se sont concentrés sur les tendances de l'écart entre les sexes dans la religiosité au fil du temps, que ce soit sur le plan théorique ou empirique. L'objectif de cet article est de contribuer à combler cette lacune en analysant l'évolution des différences entre les sexes en matière de religiosité de 1981 à 2009 en Italie, un contexte culturel intéressant en raison de la pénétration progressive de la sécularisation et du niveau élevé des inégalités entre les sexes. Notre analyse empirique est basée sur une approche longitudinale, utilisant les données de la European Values Study. Les résultats montrent que l'écart entre les sexes en Italie est assez stable en ce qui concerne de nombreux aspects de la religiosité, à trois exceptions notables près : l'écart entre les sexes a diminué en terme de croyances, dans la transmission intergénérationnelle de la foi et dans le respect des doctrines de l'Église en matière de prostitution, d'avortement, de divorce, d'euthanasie, de suicide et d'adultère. Contrairement aux attentes, dans la plupart des cas, ce rétrécissement est dû à une augmentation de la religiosité des hommes et non à une diminution de celle des femmes. | ||
