Data were drawn mainly from in-depth interviews, participant observation and informal interviews in Amsterdam. The exercise of religious citizenship is not a level playing ground for both females and males. The study concludes that religious sanctions on sex and sexuality pronounced in the religious field contradict human rights expressed in the nation state. The study also noted that the emergence of immigrant women's engagement in institutionalised religiosity binds feminist scholars to rethink of religion as a field that does not generate only oppressed female citizens rather it also provides the space for females to exercise agency. | ||

Cette recherche examine également comment, par le biais de l'exercice de l'agentivité, certaines femmes ghanéennes de deuxième génération contestent, réinterprètent ou se conforment aux sanctions sexistes dans le domaine religieux. Les données ont été principalement tirées d'entretiens approfondis, de l'observation participante et d'entretiens informels à Amsterdam. L'exercice de la citoyenneté religieuse n'est pas un terrain de jeu égal pour les femmes et les hommes. L'étude conclut que les sanctions religieuses sur le sexe et la sexualité prononcées dans le domaine religieux contredisent les droits humains exprimés dans l'État-nation. L'étude a également noté que l'émergence de l'engagement des femmes immigrées dans la religiosité institutionnalisée oblige les chercheurs féministes à repenser la religion comme un lieu qui ne génère pas seulement des citoyennes opprimées, mais qui offre également aux femmes l'espace nécessaire pour exercer leur agentivité. | ||
