Les Néerlandais, qui vers 1600 succédaient peu à peu aux Flamands, étaient particulièrement nombreux parmi eux. Dans le passé, les historiens ont trop souvent assimilé tous les négociants néerlandais à des protestants, mais il y avait parmi eux bien des catholiques. Cet article examine les rapports entre les négociants protestants et catholiques d’origine néerlandaise à Rouen en scrutant les stratégies de mariage, le choix des parrains au baptême, et les contrats de coopération commerciale. La distance entre les deux confessions apparaît bien moins grande qu’on ne l’a suggéré. Des catholiques figuraient aux baptêmes protestants, et les mariages mixtes n’étaient pas rares. En fait, en situation étrangère, la solidarité nationale semble avoir primé les divisions confessionnelles. | ||
