It is part of a larger study which seeks to relate ritual actions of testimony and ritual actions of healing. The assumptions informing the grounding of this complex rhetorical act in its various contexts are phenomenological, and the methods of analysis range from rhetoric to Wittgenstein and J. L. Austin. From rhetorical analysis the argument moves toward identifying the epistemological and hermeneutical aspects ingredient in the testimony itself. A short concluding section reflects back on the ethnographer and ethnography and raises the question: in what sense is ethnography a "testimony?"
